Thinking about coming off the pill?

You don't have to do it on your own.

Whether you're worried about your acne returning, concerned about PCOS, or simply curious about what your natural cycle actually feels like, there is a great deal that naturopathy can do to support a smooth, confident transition off hormonal contraception.

Does this sound like you?

You went on the pill years ago - perhaps for acne, painful periods, or PCOS - and now something has shifted.

You want to come off it, but you're scared of what comes next.

Maybe you're worried your skin will break out. Maybe you've read that PCOS symptoms can return. Maybe your mood has never quite felt right on the pill and you're wondering what you without it actually feels like.

Or perhaps you're ready to try for a baby and want your body and vaginal microbiome in the best possible shape before you do.

These are all completely valid reasons to seek support. And this is exactly the work I do every day.

The six things women worry about most when
coming off the pill

1. Will my acne will come back or be worse than ever?

This is the most common concern I hear. When you stop the pill, androgens that were suppressed by synthetic hormones can surge, often peaking between three and six months after stopping. This androgen rebound is the driver of post-pill acne, and for some women it can be worse than anything they experienced before going on the pill.

This is manageable with the right preparation and support. I create bespoke herbal formulas that address the specific hormonal drivers of your acne - whether that's androgen excess, liver clearance, gut dysbiosis, or blood sugar dysregulation. No two formulas are the same because no two women are the same.

The best time to start working with me is around three months before you plan to stop the pill, so your body is already prepared for the transition.

2. Will my PCOS will return?

If you went on the pill to manage polycystic ovary syndrome, coming off it can feel scary.

The pill isn't addressing the underlying drivers. When the synthetic hormones stop, those drivers are still there.

Naturopathy is well placed to support PCOS. Blood sugar regulation, androgen balance, adrenal support, and cycle regularity all respond well to herbal medicine and dietary changes. I work with you to address the root causes so that your return to a natural cycle is as smooth as possible, and your body has the support it needs to find its own natural rhythm.

3. Will my mood will crash - or my PMS will be unbearable?

Many women feel more like themselves off the pill - less anxious, less flat, more emotionally present. But for others, the hormonal transition can bring mood swings, PMS, or a general sense of emotional instability, particularly in the months after stopping.

This is where herbal nervous system support becomes really valuable. I use adaptogen and nervine herbs to support your body's stress response during the transition off the pill. It's not a generic stress supplement off a shelf, it's a formula prescribed to fit you and your lifestyle.

4. What if my period doesn't come back - or goes back to being irregular?

It can take time for the brain and ovaries to re-establish their communication after being suppressed by synthetic hormones. This is completely normal. For some women the cycle returns quickly; for others it takes three to six months.

If your cycle takes longer to return there will be a nutritional or herbal remedy that we can use to help your estrogen and progesterone levels find a rhythm.

5. What if my period becomes painful again?

This is a real concern for many. There are many ways to manage period pain or endometriosis from diet changes, to herbal medicine and gut microbiome testing. In this case we may work for up to 6 months before transitioning you off the pill.

Check out my blog to see if your period pain is considered normal (hint: it's probably not).

6. How will I cope if the migraines return?

If you went onto the pill to manage your migraines it can be scary imagining debilitating headaches returning once or twice a month. Let's work together to try to find the underlying reason for hormonal migraines before you transition off the pill.

This is a common fear felt by women who want to come off the pill to fall pregnant but they are worried about how migraines will affect their lives again.

Bespoke herbal medicine makes all the difference

I have spent thousands of hours studying and formulating herbal medicine. I don't give every woman the same formula. I blend specific herbs in specific ratios for your individual situation - whether that's post-pill acne driven by androgen excess, a sluggish cycle driven by a suppressed HPO axis, or PMS driven by progesterone deficiency.

My formulas are made to order and adjusted as your body changes. This is the art and science of herbal medicine - and it is where naturopathy genuinely shines.

Common questions about coming off the pill naturally

How long does it take for hormones to balance after stopping the pill?

Every woman is different, but most women find their cycle begins to re-establish within one to three months of stopping the pill. For some it takes up to six months. The hormonal surge that drives post-pill acne and irregular cycles typically peaks at three to six months. Working with a naturopath before and during this period can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and shorten the adjustment time.

Will my acne come back when I stop the pill?

It depends on why you went on the pill and what your skin was like before. If you went on the pill specifically for acne, there is a reasonable chance it will return - often with an initial flare driven by an androgen rebound. The good news is that this is very manageable with targeted herbal medicine, nutrition, and gut support. The best approach is to start preparing your body two to three months before you stop. Sometimes I suggest gut microbiome testing as part of a complete acne recovery protocol.

Can a naturopath help with PCOS after stopping the pill?

Yes. Naturopathy is well suited to supporting PCOS naturally. The pill suppresses PCOS symptoms but doesn't address the underlying drivers, which typically involve blood sugar dysregulation, androgen excess, and adrenal or thyroid involvement. Herbal medicine and dietary changes can significantly support the return of regular ovulation and manage the symptoms of PCOS without hormonal contraception.

What is post-pill syndrome?

Post-pill syndrome is a collection of symptoms that can occur after stopping hormonal contraception - including irregular periods, post-pill acne, hair loss, mood changes, and fatigue. It occurs because the body needs time to re-establish its own hormone production after being suppressed by synthetic hormones. Naturopathy is particularly effective at supporting the body through this transition.

What herbs help after coming off the pill?

A number of herbs are well researched for supporting hormonal recovery after stopping the pill. Chaste tree supports natural progesterone levels. Peony and licorice together support androgen balance. Schisandra supports the nervous system through the transition. St Mary's thistle supports liver clearance of synthetic hormones. The right herbs and ratios for you will depend on your individual hormonal picture - which is why a bespoke formula from a qualified naturopath is far more effective than an off-the-shelf supplement. I combine all the herbs that benefit you most into the one individualised potion, so it's not just perfect for you, but also a cost effective way of taking herbal medicine.

Should I come off the pill before trying to get pregnant?

Yes, and ideally with at least three months of preparation first. The pill depletes important nutrients including folate, B12, zinc, and magnesium - all of which are critical for a healthy pregnancy. Allowing three to six months for your body to restore these nutrients, re-establish ovulation, and optimise hormonal health gives you the best possible foundation for conception.

Can I see Simone online?

Yes. I offer telehealth consultations to women anywhere in Australia. All you need is a phone or computer. Many of my younger clients see me online and find it just as effective as an in-person consultation.
